Raytheon awarded $946m Patriot missile contract

Raytheon has been awarded a US$946 million contract to provide additional air and missile defence systems to Romania.

Raytheon has been awarded a US$946 million contract to provide additional air and missile defence systems to Romania.

As part of the contract, the prime will work with local Romanian defence companies to deliver the capability, which includes radars, control stations and missiles.

“Raytheon is committed to providing Romania with advanced integrated air and missile defence capabilities to protect its citizens and critical infrastructure,” Pete Bata, senior vice president of Global Patriot at Raytheon, said.

“Romania’s continued investment in Patriot is a testament to the nation’s dedication to ensuring collective security, deterrence and stability across Europe.”

Raytheon explained that the Patriot missile is able to defend users against long-range cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles. It is currently used as the foundation of air defence for 19 countries.

It comes two months after the US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract to increase production capacity for the Patriot Advanced Capability – 3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancements (MSE), bringing annual production to 650 per year.

The contract marks a major step towards meeting the increasing global demand for the critical air and missile defence capability provided by the PAC-3 MSE.

In 2024, production has grown by more than 30 per cent with another 20 per cent growth planned for 2025.

Brian Kubik, vice-president of PAC-3 Programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, welcomed this contract announcement, saying, “To meet the increased demand, Lockheed Martin started this effort with internal funding more than a year ago to expand the PAC-3 MSE production capacity, both in our factories and across the supply chain. We are also investing to implement lean, agile processes to deliver this critical product to our partners more efficiently.”
