Defence is taking a major step forward in promoting Australian innovation, technology and manufacturing on the global stage with the establishment of a dedicated office to drive sovereign defence exports.
The newly formed Australian Defence Strategic Sales Office (ADSSO) will play a key role in facilitating the sale of select Australian defence capabilities to priority international partners. By providing a centrally coordinated platform, ADSSO will proactively promote, negotiate and advance export sales for Australian companies, strengthening the nation’s presence in global defence markets.
The initiative is a joint effort between government and industry, leveraging frontline experience from industry representatives to ensure an effective and commercially driven approach. It delivers on commitments outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy, which emphasises supporting Australian defence industry exports and integrating local companies into global supply chains.
It also aligns with the 2024 Defence Industry Development Strategy, which underscores the need for improved coordination between Defence and industry to maximise export opportunities with trusted international partners.
The initial priority capabilities for ADSSO include the following:
- Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle and Hawkei Protected Mobility Vehicle
- Boxer Heavy Weapon Carrier
- AS9 Huntsman and Redback infantry fighting vehicle
- MQ-28 Ghost Bat
- Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN)
Future priorities will be determined based on Australia’s strategic requirements in consultation with industry.
Australia’s defence industry has a strong track record of exporting world-leading technology. The Bushmaster, for example, is now in service with nine countries, and Australia recently secured a record-breaking $1 billion deal to export Boxer armoured vehicles to Germany. Additionally, Canada has announced a partnership with Australia on Over The Horizon Radar technology, building on Australia’s expertise with the JORN.
The establishment of ADSSO signals a new era in Australia’s defence export strategy, ensuring Australian companies are well-positioned to expand their global footprint and contribute to the nation’s defence and economic security.
