The United Kingdom has announced it will seek to grow opportunities for British businesses in Australia during a current visit from UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West.
It’s understood that the UK minister will meet with government officials in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane during the visit to discuss accelerated defence cooperation under AUKUS, as well as reinforce shared commitment to Indo-Pacific security, Ukraine, and the Middle East.
The minister is also expected to discuss the redevelopment of a new Melbourne consulate set to enhance growth and support further investment opportunities delivering on the UK government’s Plan for Change.
Creating jobs and investment opportunities through increased economic and security collaboration is set to be at the forefront of the visit to Australia, according to Catherine West, Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.
“The Indo-Pacific is central to our Plan for Change and vital to the UK’s growth ambitions, with the region projected to deliver half of global growth by 2050,” she said.
“Australia presents major investment opportunities for the UK, including through its superfund sector and the redevelopment of a new consulate in Melbourne.
“I am here to unlock these opportunities through engaging with government and business leaders.
“Our partnership is at the heart of our commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, working together to build a peaceful and prosperous region.”
The arrival follows a recent trip from UK Defence Procurement and Industry Minister Maria Eagle to Australia and comes as the HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group deploys to the region for Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 in July and an upcoming British & Irish Lions Tour also due to start in July.
In addition to engaging with business leaders, including Australia’s $2 trillion superannuation fund systems, the minister will mark the beginning of a new British Consulate office project in Melbourne, according to the British Consulate. The project is expected to unlock fresh growth opportunities for Aussies and Brits alike, demonstrating the investment in and celebration of our partnership with Australia.
The minister will also meet with leading figures from the world of art and culture during a reception that will showcase British Council initiatives in Australia and the Indo-Pacific, demonstrating the UK’s commitment to global creative collaboration.
