The University of Melbourne has entered into a memorandum of understanding with global defence technology company QinetiQ, establishing a partnership that brings together world-class academic research and cutting-edge industry expertise.

The agreement will see both organisations collaborate across a range of research areas including autonomous systems, robotics and data analytics. The partnership also aims to pursue opportunities aligned with the AUKUS agreement, strengthening Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities.

The MOU will provide academics with access to real-world defence challenges and data, helping to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical application.

In return, QinetiQ engineers and scientists will have access to advanced training programs, with opportunities for university-accredited learning and professional development opportunities.

University of Melbourne deputy vice-chancellor (research), Professor Mark Cassidy, said the agreement highlights the importance of academic–industry collaboration.

Cassidy said, “This MOU reflects our shared commitment to building Australia’s sovereign capabilities. It harnesses the strengths of both academia and industry, and opens new pathways for students through scholarships, internships and potential exchanges with QinetiQ internationally. It’s about preparing the next generation of innovators in Australia’s defence and national security sectors.”

The agreement also includes initiatives to support diversity and inclusion, with a strong focus on creating education and career pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, as well as those from non-traditional backgrounds.

Simon Fredericks, QinetiQ Australia managing director- engineering services, said the partnership underlines QinetiQ’s long-term commitment to Australia’s defence future.

“We’re investing in the pillars that matter most – our people, our infrastructure and our capacity to innovate,” Fredericks said. “By combining academic research with real-world defence needs, we’re helping to develop the skills, technologies, and partnerships that are vital to meeting our national priorities,” Fredericks added.
