H&B Defence is accelerating efforts to prepare Australian industry for participation in the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine program, mobilising world-leading expertise from its global joint venture partners to deliver the Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification pilot program.

Within weeks of securing the landmark Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification (AUSSQ) contract, H&B Defence has deployed subject matter experts from Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) in the United States and enlisted senior technical specialists from Babcock Australasia to strengthen its in-country support capabilities.

The integrated team, comprising veteran nuclear program and quality assurance professionals, will conduct a comprehensive program of audits, technical assessments and compliance checks across selected Australian suppliers.

Their mission: to identify corrective actions and guide businesses on the path to becoming approved suppliers to the Newport News Shipyard – home of the Virginia Class submarine build program. The goal is to open the door for Australian companies to secure work on future AUKUS Class submarines.

This intensive capability uplift forms the backbone of the AUSSQ pilot program, designed to create new industrial pathways for Australian suppliers into the US-led AUKUS defence enterprise.

Since being appointed to lead the initiative in May, H&B Defence has released an expression of interest for seven priority work packages. These packages focus on critical manufacturing areas essential to progressing Australia’s future submarine capability and supporting the trilateral AUKUS effort.

H&B Defence will draw on its deep understanding of Australian industry and national safety frameworks, combined with direct access to the nuclear quality requirements of the Newport News Shipyard, to assess, select and fast-track a first wave of local suppliers.

This two-pronged approach – bridging Australian capability with US program requirements – positions H&B Defence at the forefront of building sovereign defence industrial readiness while enhancing AUKUS integration.

Quotes attributable to Tim Brown, managing director, H&B Defence:

“Rapidly deploying our validation team underscores H&B Defence’s commitment to laser-focused delivery and helps ensure Australian suppliers are nuclear-ready without delay.”

“H&B Defence uniquely brings together two global leaders in nuclear-powered submarine operations to deliver expertise that accelerates sovereign capability development for the AUKUS program.”

“By embedding expert teams on the ground and creating critical reachback into Newport News, we’re seamlessly transferring knowledge, streamlining efficiencies and qualifying suppliers to meet both national and international standards for the Virginia Class supply chain.”

The AUSSQ pilot program is seen as a key pillar in preparing Australia’s industrial base to support the delivery of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS partnership, boosting both national capability and regional security.
