The US government has announced it will streamline environmental policy procedures to expand the US defence industrial base faster.

The US government has announced it will streamline environmental policy procedures to expand the US defence industrial base faster.

US National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) implementing procedures will reportedly be streamlined under a government-wide effort to modernise and expedite environmental reviews for both public infrastructure and military construction projects.

Changes include expanding categorical exclusions for department-wide use, mandating deadlines for the completion of environmental reviews, simplifying the ability to adapt and update NEPA implementing procedures, and capturing knowledge from previous evaluations to expedite new project reviews.

“These improvements are essential to modernising our infrastructure and strengthening our national security,” Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael Duffey said.

“By streamlining the environmental review process, we will deliver critical projects more efficiently, ensuring our military and defence industrial base have the facilities and resources needed to defend our nation.”

The new NEPA implementing procedures are now uniform across the Department of Defense, in line with overall government strategy outlined by US President Donald Trump.

The changes are envisioned to reduce the time and cost associated with environmental reviews, enabling faster construction in the defence industrial base and military construction projects vital to national security.

US Secretary Pete Hegseth, speaking during a US DOD video published online earlier this year, said the administration will concentrate on war fighter capability, not distractions.

“No more distractions, no more electric tanks, no more gender confusion, no more climate change worship. We are laser-focused on our mission of warfighting,” he said.

“You look into the eyes of these young Americans who are giving the best years of their lives in uniform to serve their nation. They are incredible.

“We don’t fight because we hate what’s in front of us, we fight because we love what’s behind us.”
