The first international operation of Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Battle Command System in Europe marks a major point in “allied defence modernisation”.
A “major milestone” for the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) has been achieved in Poland, pointing to a crucial step towards increasing “allied defence modernisation”.
On Tuesday (23 September), Poland’s Ministry of National Defence conducted a range of live-fire operational exercises in Warsaw, marking the first time the IBCS has been operational internationally.
“This achievement not only highlights the exceptional performance and capabilities of IBCS but also demonstrates Poland’s steadfast commitment to homeland defence and the enhancement of European security,” said Kenn Todorov, Northrop Grumman vice president and general manager, command and control and weapons integration.
The successful exercise follows Poland’s 2018 move to select the IBCS to serve as the primary system in its WISŁA medium range air defense modernisation program, making it the first European nation and US ally to acquire the system. In late 2021, Northrop Grumman was awarded an over $1 billion contract from the US Army for complete production of the IBCS.
“IBCS revolutionises interoperability and integration between Poland, US, and allies across multiple domains, delivering advanced capabilities needed to counter complex threats,” Todorov said.
The IBCS is a “revolutionary command and control system” that centralises sensors, networks and communication technology from various domains (air, land, sea, space, cyber) into a single operating system. This stealth technology allows for an “actionable picture of the full battlespace” to be created and thus provide defence personnel with a wider scope to respond to threats.
The successful testing of the IBCS signals a positive message of success to other modern missile defence systems using similar technology, such as Lockheed Martin’s AIR 6500, which is currently being utilised by the Australian Defence Force to respond to the “increasingly complex” nature of contemporary conflict and warfare.
Production of the IBCS remains ongoing as the system is being fielded in Poland. As a part of the US Army program for integrated air and missile defence modernisation, future fielding for the tech is planned across combatant commands in Europe and the Indo-Pacific.
