Selectable levels of autonomy and aided target recognition are being developed for the Slinger remote weapon system, according to a recent announcement from EOS Defense Systems USA.

The defence company has announced intentions to have Slingers equipped with these advanced features deployed across multiple platforms as part of a layered defence architecture against unmanned aerial system threats.

The upgrades are reportedly being developed to meet continual advancement in counter-drone technology to protect critical assets and formations.

“Slinger is the most accurate remote weapon system on the market, and these developments will significantly improve the CUAS mission by reducing operator workload via assisted detection, classification and engagement of drone threats,” said Shawn Baerlocher, EOS Defense Systems USA chief executive officer.

“The RWS can operate in a ‘stand-alone’ capacity, utilising only its native, passive sensors or receive an external cue from a remote sensor. Either functionality allows effective execution of platform self-defence.

“The addition of an automation suite enables drone defeat with reduced burden on the warfighter. EOS Defense Systems USA will also begin manufacturing Slinger at our Huntsville, Alabama, facility to meet growing demand from US government customers.”

EOS has reportedly conducted several Slinger field tests, demonstrating high kill rates against drone threats in operationally relevant environments, such as manoeuvring Group 1 UAS.

More than 2,500 EOS remote weapon systems have been delivered and deployed by militaries across Australia, the Middle East, North America, Europe, and south-east Asia.

EOS Defense Systems USA has operated as the company’s regional hub since 2018.
