Northrop Grumman and Huneed Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding in Seoul at the ADEX International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition that aims to enhance the Republic of Korea’s national defence through stronger ties to industry organisations.

“Partnerships like this are essential for rapidly advancing defence capabilities. Working with Huneed strengthens the Republic of Korea’s ability to develop sovereign defence systems and respond to evolving threats,” said Kwan Lee, Northrop Grumman’s executive for the ROK.

Northrop said that as the global supply chain and market continues to change and evolve, it is important that effective collaborations with national defence sectors are established to enhance “workforce development, knowledge sharing and opportunities to improve long-term readiness”. The MOU aims to sculpt a pathway that will expand future collaboration as the ROK enhances its sovereign defence capabilities.

“This partnership with Northrop Grumman underscores Huneed’s unique role in the Republic of Korea’s defence industry – working hand in hand with global leaders to bring next-generation capabilities to the Republic of Korea,” said BK Kim, Huneed Technologies chief overseas officer.

Additive manufacturing (AM), more commonly known as 3D printing, is a production process that Northrop has been utilising to deliver resource-efficient and agile products. Used across radio frequency sensors, hypersonic weapons and engines, Northrop said these processes have allowed the “previously impossible designs, unlocking new levels of flexibility, efficiency and creativity”. With Korea’s leading aerospace and defence company, Huneed Technologies is now expanding its expertise into AM. The MOU demonstrates a commitment by both companies to furthering research into new technologies and how this may impact the ROK’s national defence industry.

“By advancing technologies such as additive manufacturing, Huneed is committed to shaping the future of aerospace defence and strengthening the Republic of Korea’s position in the global defence value chain,” Kim said.

Northrop has previously worked alongside the ROK when in 2023 they were awarded a contract by Korea Aerospace Industries to manufacture and provide Airborne Laser Mine Detection System solutions for the Korean Mine Countermeasures Helicopter program.
