Tasmania is set to host a new centre for cutting-edge maritime research and testing, with the establishment of a research, development, innovation and testing facility at the Australian Maritime College’s Beauty Point campus.
The new hub will fast-track the development of next-generation maritime technologies through a partnership between the Australian Maritime College (AMC) and UK-based defence technology company SubSea Craft.
Spanning around 250 square metres with direct access to the water, the facility will feature workshops, offices and collaborative spaces designed to support applied research, sea trials and product evaluation.
AMC principal Mal Wise said the partnership with SubSea Craft marked another milestone in the college’s ambition to create a national defence, maritime, innovation and design precinct.
“This collaboration brings industry and academia together in a way that gives our students and staff direct exposure to the technologies shaping the future of maritime operations,” Wise said.
SubSea Craft chief executive officer Camilla Martin said the new facility would provide the company with the perfect environment to advance its technology and expand its regional presence.
“This facility gives our team the ideal space to develop, test and refine emerging technologies that enhance operational capability in the toughest maritime conditions,” Martin said.
“Our investment in Tasmania reflects our confidence in the state and our long-term commitment to serving customers across Australia and the Indo-Pacific.”
The partnership strengthens AMC’s reputation as Australia’s leading institution for maritime research and education and underscores Tasmania’s growing importance in the nation’s defence innovation ecosystem.
