Lockheed Martin Australia has awarded Moog Australia a major contract to develop the control actuation system for the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS), marking another milestone in building sovereign guided weapons capability.
The new partnership will strengthen Australia’s defence industrial base and directly support the Commonwealth’s Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise, which aims to boost national resilience and preparedness through domestic missile manufacturing.
Moog joins Thales, Marand and AW Bell among a growing network of Australian companies contributing to guided weapons production and technology development.
James Heading, director and general manager of Lockheed Martin Australia missiles and fire control, said the partnership represents a key step in advancing Australia’s GWEO ambitions.
“As a GWEO strategic partner, Lockheed Martin welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with Moog. Working with Australian industry and world-class suppliers like Moog is essential to achieving the objectives of the GWEO Plan and strengthening Australia’s defence industrial ecosystem,” Heading said.
Moog’s control actuation system for the GMLRS comprises a control unit and four precision actuators that independently adjust fins positioned around the rocket, enhancing flight control and accuracy. This technology allows GMLRS rockets to steer with precision, neutralising high-value targets with reduced collateral damage and improving troop safety by engaging threats from greater distances.
Bryan O’Connor, managing director of Moog Australia, said the contract highlights the company’s commitment to supporting sovereign defence manufacturing.
“We’re proud to play a role in developing a sovereign missile capability for Australia,” O’Connor said. “Our team is looking forward to working closely with Lockheed Martin Australia and the GWEO team to deliver this critical capability.”
Lockheed Martin Australia continues to work with government, Defence, industry and academia to establish a sustainable guided weapons manufacturing capability across the nation.
“The future of Australia’s guided weapons industry depends on collaboration, innovation and a strong industrial foundation,” Heading said.
“Our partnership with Moog Australia reflects Lockheed Martin’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology and trusted local partnerships to help build an enduring capability for the country.”
Together, Lockheed Martin and Moog Australia are helping to establish a resilient and innovative defence manufacturing base designed to enhance national security and strengthen Australia’s role in regional stability.
