A new scholarship has launched with Griffith University and Astute to support veterans with their tertiary education.

Griffith University Veterans Program launched a veteran student scholarship partnership with Astute, aiming to assist Australian Defence Force veterans transition into university life and promote positive post-service outcomes.

The program aims to bridge the gap between industry and academia through providing financial support for students and their families, making the transition from service to study.

“[The program] allows us to elevate the veteran student journey here at Griffith University, lessening the financial burden of study, bringing in more collaborative opportunities and truly making a difference for veterans transitioning into student life and navigating the career pathways,” said David Paddison, director of the Veterans Program at Griffith University.

“By combining academic resources with industry support through the Griffith Veterans Program scholarship opportunity, we’re paving the way for a future that recognises the extraordinary skills and experience of our veteran community.”

The scholarship aims to provide sufficient personal, financial and educational support to participants’ households so they are equipped to pursue their studies. The aim is for participants to then transfer their practical defence experience to careers within Australia’s defence and advanced manufacturing sectors.

“We are proud to be the first industry partner supporting this Griffith University initiative and deeply honoured that the program will carry the Astute name,” said Mark Shanley, sales and marketing director at Astute Group.

It demonstrates what is possible when academia and industry work together towards a shared purpose – supporting veterans, strengthening capability and building a skilled national workforce.

“They have dedicated their time to protect us and we are keen to give back by helping them transition successfully into civilian careers.”

The program was officially launched at the Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition in Sydney on Wednesday.
