Northrop Grumman has announced a US$60,000 funding increase for the American Australian Association Graduate Education Scholarship program, strengthening support for Australian students pursuing advanced study in the United States.

Unveiled in the wake of the Indo Pacific 2025 conference, the funding boost will help more Australians undertake postgraduate education in fields central to Australia’s future sovereign capability, including quantum technologies, hypersonics, artificial intelligence and advanced computational systems.

The American Australian Association (AAA) Scholarship program is a long-standing initiative fostering academic excellence and deepening strategic, scientific and cultural links between Australia and the United States.

The latest announcement highlights Northrop Grumman’s commitment to developing highly skilled talent under AUKUS Pillar 2 and advancing trilateral cooperation in cutting-edge technologies, all core themes of Indo Pacific 2025.

Northrop Grumman and the American Australian Association will continue their partnership through the American Australian Association Northrop Grumman Corporation Graduate Education Scholarships, supporting Australian graduate and postdoctoral researchers undertaking frontier research in the United States.

Past AAA–Northrop Grumman scholarship recipients:

  • 2025 – Jane Millward | Signals Processing | MIT
  • 2024 – Adam Lawrence | Computational Mechanics | University of Illinois
  • 2023 – Alwyn Johnson | Supply Chain Resilience | MIT
  • 2022 – Sarah Strong | Quantum Physics | UCLA
  • 2021 – Todd Whittaker | Engineering | University of Colorado Boulder
  • 2020 – Shamindra Shrotriya | Statistics & Data Science | Carnegie Mellon University

Rob Denney, Northrop Grumman’s country executive for Australia, said the additional funding would expand opportunities for emerging Australian innovators.

“We’re pleased to extend the reach of the AAA Scholarship program through this funding. It’s a smart investment in the future – empowering emerging Australian talent to contribute to innovation and capability development across both nations.”

US chargé d’affaires Erika Olson said the program reflected the deep strength of the alliance, adding, “Northrop Grumman and the American Australian Association are steadfast champions of the US–Australia alliance. This America250 Scholarship program is a fitting tribute to the United States’ semiquincentennial anniversary – investing in the future of our unique partnership through education and shared experience.”

The funding is part of broader America250 initiatives marking the 250th anniversary of US independence in 2026.

International activities including those in Australia are set to highlight the strength of US alliances through new scholarship programs, cultural partnerships, storytelling initiatives and the illumination of Australian landmarks on 4 July 2026.

AAA president Steven Marshall welcomed Northrop Grumman’s continued support, “Education changes lives and this vital support helps bright Australian minds turn ambition into impact – strengthening not only individual potential but also the scientific and strategic capabilities that unite our two countries.”

The American Australian Association – Northrop Grumman Corporation Graduate Education Scholarship provides up to US$40,000 for Australians undertaking at least one year of full-time postgraduate study (masters, PhD or postdoctoral research) in the United States in fields such as AI, quantum physics, defence technology, engineering, mathematics and related disciplines.

Funding may be used for tuition, travel, living expenses and other study-related costs.
