General Dynamics Land Systems has successfully demonstrated its Precision Effects & Reconnaissance, Canister-Housed (PERCH) system, developed in partnership with AeroVironment in Texas.

The PERCH system uses AeroVironment’s (AV) Switchblade 300 and 600 loitering munitions on the M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 battle tanks and Stryker infantry carrier vehicles. It is designed for quick and efficient integration onto armoured vehicles. The system provides advanced situational awareness, targeting, scouting and can improve the reach of forces.

The system was tested at the US Army’s Machine Assisted Rugged Sapper event, which is an initiative that seeks to integrate autonomous systems while reducing physical, human harm.

“PERCH allows units to deploy Switchblade loitering munitions far forward on the battlefield while remaining covered and concealed themselves,” said Jim Pasquarette, vice president for US strategy and business development at General Dynamics Land Systems.

“We have seen a lot of soldier interest in this ready-made, effective concept, and we look forward to future demonstrations. With our partners at AV, we’re generating the power to win on the modern battlefield.”

The test, which was originally completed in October, saw users completing an obstacle breach with the assistance of beyond-line-of-sight reconnaissance of targets provided by AV’s Switchblade munitions from an Abrams tank via the PERCH system.

“Integrating Switchblade 300 and 600 into General Dynamics Land Systems platforms through the PERCH modular kit delivers immediate operational advantages – extending reach and enabling rapid, precise effects from protected positions,” said Brian Young, senior vice president, loitering munitions systems, at AV.

“This demonstration showcased the expanded beyond-line-of-sight precision engagement capabilities available to our military by embedding mature loitering munition systems on combat vehicles.”
