The 2026 Defence Trailblazer capability showcase has highlighted the strength and growth of Australia’s defence innovation pipeline.
More than 270 representatives from government, Defence, industry and academia came together at Parliament House for the DTECH26 capability showcase, the largest event yet under the Defence Trailblazer program.
The showcase featured 55 emerging technologies, many developed by small and medium enterprises, aimed at addressing both current and future defence challenges.
With Defence Trailblazer set to conclude in late 2026, the showcase was a key opportunity to introduce its successive program, the Australian Defence Industry Incubator (AUSDII), which aims to take early-stage innovation into operational use.
“AUSDII will build on a proven track record of Defence Trailblazer success to achieve its mission of delivering operationally validated solutions and technologies,” said Dr Sanjay Mazumdar, executive director of Defence Trailblazer.
“Our close relationship with the Defence and National Security community, as well as the global defence sector, will be pivotal to AUSDII’s value proposition.”
AUSDII will be a non-profit that is expected to build on this foundation, with a stronger focus on scaling and commercialising defence technologies.
Modelled on international counterparts and programs such as DEFENSEWERX and NATO DIANA, AUSDII will target early-stage companies and small and medium-sized enterprises, helping translate concepts into deployable capability for both domestic and global markets.
Since its launch in 2022, Defence Trailblazer has focused on bridging the gap between research and industry.
The program has seen the establishment of 277 collaborations, advanced more than 110 technologies, and attracted over $140 million in co-investment from industry partners.
It has also supported dozens of start-ups and trained hundreds of students and professionals, highlighting a growing emphasis on building sovereign capability through innovation.
