An advisory board has been established to guide Western Australia’s new Defence Industry Skills Centre of Excellence.
The board is expected to provide the government with direction and advice on investment measures to grow the WA defence industry training sector.
The Defence Industry Skills Centre of Excellence (DISCoE) is backed by a $14.6 million investment from the state and federal government and has primary aims of ensuring that Australia’s workforce is ready to support growing capabilities and measures supporting national defence priorities, such as AUKUS.
The program is being run by South Metropolitan TAFE to deliver specified training courses across critical defence precincts in WA.
“At the heart of the Defence Industry Skills Centre of Excellence are our students – the future workforce who will help shape Australia’s defence capability,” South Metropolitan managing director Darshi Ganeson said.
“We are working closely with industry to ensure our training is practical, relevant and leads to real career opportunities in this important sector.
“This advisory board will help strengthen those connections, so students can move confidently from training into meaningful, long-term careers.”
Composed of industry, government, union, education and community leaders, the board will be prioritising a “collaborative and coordinated” approach to the program.
Andrew Widdis has been named as DISCoE’s executive director and will be instrumental in providing support, logistics and leadership to the program and board.
He has over two decades of experience across defence education and enhancement operations, primarily within naval shipbuilding and sustainment efforts.
