Western Australia is making public calls out to the defence industry to help the state’s ongoing push to become a defence hub for the country.

The WA local government has put out an official expression of interest (EOI) for local, national and international defence companies wishing to establish a presence in the state.

The Cook government said this will help in strengthening Australia’s homegrown, sovereign defence capabilities through domestic establishment of industrial bases.

“This is an opportunity for companies with an international market to establish a presence in WA,” said WA Defence Industries Minister Paul Papalia.

“We want to attract global companies to help shape a sovereign capability that supports our allies and strengthens defence supply chains.

“We’re not starting from scratch, WA has the skills, the industrial base and the innovation.

“This EOI is about bringing it all together and building something bigger.”

In recent years, WA has made continued efforts to transform the state into Australia’s key defence hub, with advancements such as the Henderson Naval Shipbuilding Yard, Defence Industry Skills Centre of Excellence, and the Defence Industry Development Grants contributing to a strong industry and workforce.

Companies that operate in virtually any defence-related industry are encouraged to put themselves forward for the EOI, including manufacturing, engineering, space and other defence-critical fields.

“This is a call out to our most forward-thinking businesses. If you have the capability, ambition and an existing global market, we want you helping to build this precinct from the ground up,” said WA Premier Roger Cook.

“This will help diversify our economy, create quality jobs for the next generation and deliver on our plan to make more things in WA.”

WA is currently hosting the Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference & Exhibition, which will see major defence leaders from Australia and the world come together to propel the industry.
