Major shipbuilder Austal Defence Shipbuilding Australia has announced the signing of agreements with Lloyd’s Register and DNV Australia.
Austal is pushing ahead with plans to provide Naval Classification Services across the life cycle of the Landing Craft Medium and Landing Craft Heavy build programs, set to be delivered to the Australian Army under the Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement.
The Lloyds Register agreement provides contractual services for the Landing Craft Medium build program until 2032 and Lloyd’s Register staff will be present for the duration of the contract life cycle at Austal’s Henderson facilities.
The DNV Australia agreement will extend services over the life of the Heavy Landing Craft build program, scheduled for completion in 2038.
The Landing Craft Medium and Landing Craft Heavy vessels will be assessed to the International Quality Management Standard ISO 9001 by the two classification services providers.
“The agreements extend Austal’s long-running partnerships with both Lloyd’s Register and DNV Australia for quality assurance work and was a highlight of Day 2 of the Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference & Exhibition 2026,” according to a public statement from Austal this week.
“Continuing the theme, our head of strategic supply chain Brent Carey delivered a well-received presentation on Continuous Naval Shipbuilding in WA, to conference delegates.”
The Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference & Exhibition was held in Perth earlier this week. The event has attracted an international line-up of senior defence leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, incoming Chief of the Defence Force Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, United States Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Stephen Koehler and Australian astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg, attending the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre event from 26 to 28 May.
More than 250 companies from 12 nations will participate alongside more than 100 international and domestic delegations who are expected to attend the event.
