A new satellite communications system by Leidos is expected to greatly enhance the US Department of War’s space and defence communications operations.

A new satellite communications system by Leidos is expected to greatly enhance the US Department of War’s space and defence communications operations.

The Joint Management Tool (JMT), which was created with the help of the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and Space Command, uses cloud-based platforms to increase responsiveness and awareness in real time.

Leidos said the JMT is expected to reduce communications analysis time by up to 85 per cent.

“The JMT brings clarity to complex satellite communications, giving operators faster, more reliable access to the data they need to make decisions,” Paul Welch, senior vice president of digital modernisation at Leidos, said.

“This work underscores our role in operating, sustaining and defending the most critical networks supporting US defence missions globally.”

The tool is constructed by using commercial-off-the-shelf telecommunications modules, which Leidos said will allow the US Department of War to easily integrate a range of global software mechanisms.

The JMT’s modular architecture will enable quick updates and flexibility to the ever-changing combat environment.

By combining service and operational actions between both combat commands and defence service agencies, the company said this new satellite communication method will replace the first DISA tool that was launched and deployed in 2004.
