The Returned & Services League NSW (RSL NSW) branch has appointed respected military leader and senior executive Michael “Mick” Frewen GAICD as its new chief executive officer, bringing decades of experience across defence, emergency services, healthcare and not-for-profit leadership.

Frewen will commence in the role in August 2026, following an extensive executive search process aimed at identifying a leader capable of guiding the organisation through its next phase of renewal and growth.

His appointment comes as RSL NSW continues work to strengthen governance, rebuild trust and deliver its strategic priorities while supporting more than 300 volunteer-led sub-branches across the state.

Frewen joins RSL NSW after serving as chief executive officer of CareFlight since 2018, where he led the organisation through a period of significant operational growth and expansion.

Before joining CareFlight, he held senior executive roles with International SOS, one of the world’s largest providers of medical assistance and travel security services.

Prior to transitioning into the corporate and not-for-profit sectors, Frewen spent two decades serving in the Australian Army, including leadership roles within Australia’s elite Special Forces community.

During his military career, he served in the Special Air Service Regiment and held a range of command appointments, including operational deployments.

His service included:

  • Operation Tanager in Timor-Leste
  • Operation Sumatra Assist following the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami
  • Operation Slipper in Afghanistan

Frewen retired from full-time military service in 2007 at the rank of lieutenant colonel before returning to the Army Reserve in 2022. He also joined RSL NSW that year and currently serves as a member of the Balmain-Rozelle RSL sub-branch.

RSL NSW chair Louise Sullivan said Frewen’s combination of military leadership, corporate experience and commitment to service made him the right person to lead the organisation into its next chapter.

“The board was determined to appoint a leader with the experience, judgement and character required to guide RSL NSW into its next chapter,” Sullivan said.

She said Frewen brought a strong understanding of mission-driven organisations, governance and building high-performing teams.

His appointment comes as RSL NSW focuses on strengthening its foundations and ensuring the organisation remains an effective advocate and support network for veterans and their families.

Acting RSL NSW president Brigadier (Ret’d) Vince Williams CSC said Frewen’s background made him uniquely suited to lead the state’s largest veteran support organisation.

“Mick has spent his career leading in complex and demanding environments where teamwork, accountability and service are paramount,” BRIG Williams said.

He said Frewen’s experience as a Special Forces commander, corporate executive and charity leader demonstrated his ability to guide organisations through periods of significant change.

The appointment comes as RSL NSW prepares to finalise its “Better Together” strategic plan, which will shape the organisation’s priorities over the next three years.

The plan aims to strengthen support for veterans and their families while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the RSL NSW network.

BRIG Williams also acknowledged acting CEO Trina Constable for her leadership during a critical period for the organisation.

He said Constable had helped guide RSL NSW through a period of renewal while maintaining a strong focus on members and the broader veteran community.

Her work included leading member consultation through the organisation’s Listening Tour and supporting governance improvements designed to strengthen RSL NSW’s future.

Frewen said he is honoured to take on the role and continue the RSL’s longstanding commitment to supporting veterans, families and communities.

“The RSL is one of Australia’s most respected veteran organisations, with a proud history of service stretching back 110 years,” Frewen said.

He said he looked forward to working with the RSL NSW board, staff, volunteers and members to build on the organisation’s legacy and ensure it remained strong, relevant and sustainable for future generations.

Frewen will officially assume the role of RSL NSW chief executive officer in August 2026.
