As a decision looms for the multibillion-dollar replacement program for the US Navy’s Super Hornet program, Northrop Grumman has officially opened a major expansion of its Florida-based sixth-generation airpower precinct.
The company’s major investment in the Melbourne, Florida-based sixth-generation precinct is designed to bolster Northrop Grumman’s pitch to the US Navy for the lucrative, sixth-generation fighter program to replace the ageing Super Hornet-based carrier airwing fleets, building on the success and progress made by the company’s B-21 Raider program.
Tom Jones, corporate vice-president and president, Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems, said: “We’re continuing to grow in Florida, turning years of investment and experience into real capabilities our warfighters need. This facility reinforces Melbourne as the epicentre of sixth-generation aircraft.”
The facility hosts a 5,000-strong workforce and is anchored by a new, approximately 28,000 square metre (300,000 square foot) engineering facility, including space for over 1,200 engineers and 17 secure laboratories, dedicated for the research and development of advanced, next-generation aircraft and subsystems.
“Between these walls in just a few months, we will have cutting-edge labs and hundreds of skilled engineers coming together in a world-class facility. This is what momentum looks like,” Jones said.
Northrop Grumman’s vision for the US Navy’s F/A-XX program presents a formidable leap in carrier aviation, positioning a stealthy, next-generation fighter as the strategic quarterback of the future carrier air wing.
The company’s plan draws heavily on lessons and technologies from the B-21 Raider program, with Northrop’s concept featuring a sleek, tailless, broad-spectrum stealth airframe with dorsal engine intakes, engineered to ghost past advanced low-frequency air defence radars.
Built to overcome the tyranny of distance in contested maritime environments, the aircraft prioritises extended range and heavy internal payload capacity. This enables aircraft carriers to launch precision strikes from well beyond the reach of enemy anti-ship missiles. Rather than relying solely on traditional dogfighting agility, the jet acts as an airborne command node, seamlessly orchestrating swarms of autonomous collaborative combat aircraft to scout, jam and strike ahead of the main force.
Having focused its resources exclusively on the Navy’s carrier-based requirement over land-based fighter competitions, Northrop offers a heavily reinforced, open-architecture platform built for rapid software evolution, ensuring the carrier fleet remains lethal, connected and survivable for decades to come.
“Most times, we host ribbon cuttings when we open the doors to a new facility. In our world, we also celebrate by closing them, because our people are about to get to work on things in this facility that we can’t talk about,” Jones said.
