Lockheed Martin is investing millions of dollars to develop a modular payload delivery system designed to turn proven hypersonic technologies into a flexible family of weapons capable of supporting long-range strike, missile defence and other emerging missions.
Lockheed Martin has announced a multimillion-dollar investment in a new modular payload delivery system (MPDS), as the US defence giant seeks to accelerate the development and production of scalable hypersonic weapons.
The company said MPDS will re-architect key technologies from its existing hypersonic missile designs into a modular framework, allowing different payloads and mission requirements to be incorporated without requiring the development of an entirely new weapon system.
The approach is intended to support both offensive and defensive applications while reducing the time, cost and engineering effort traditionally associated with integrating new payloads into hypersonic systems.
Under the concept, a common hypersonic airframe could be adapted for different missions, including deep, long-range strike, shorter-range missions carrying larger payloads and missile defence applications.
Lockheed Martin said the modular architecture would allow the US Department of War and industry partners to integrate diverse payloads while minimising changes to the underlying weapon system.
The company is positioning the capability as part of a broader effort to accelerate the delivery of hypersonic weapons and support the US government’s push to expand munitions production.
Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin vice-president and general manager of strategic and missile defence systems, said the investment reflected the company’s focus on responding rapidly to changing operational requirements.
“Our modular delivery system reflects our commitment to listening to our customers and delivering innovative solutions that meet evolving mission requirements,” Caldwell said.
“By investing in a modular payload delivery system built upon our proven hypersonic technologies and legacy, we’re expanding operational utility, delivering affordability and accelerating advanced capabilities that would be historically burdened by development timelines and challenges.”
A key element of the program is the use of existing, flight-tested hypersonic technologies rather than developing a completely new weapons architecture.
Lockheed Martin said MPDS would leverage its existing industrial base and qualified designs, while a modular approach would reduce the non-recurring engineering required to integrate new payloads.
The company also plans to streamline assembly, integration and testing processes, with greater use of automation intended to reduce labour requirements and accelerate production.
That approach could allow the same underlying airframe and manufacturing infrastructure to support multiple weapons configurations, potentially improving production efficiency as demand for hypersonic capabilities grows.
The investment comes as the US military seeks to expand its inventory of hypersonic weapons capable of operating at extreme speeds and defeating increasingly sophisticated defensive systems.
Hypersonic weapons are being developed for a range of missions, including long-range precision strike and missile defence, with their speed and manoeuvrability intended to complicate an adversary’s ability to detect, track and intercept them.
Lockheed Martin said MPDS is being developed in support of the US government’s Scaled Hypersonics Critical Technology Area and broader munitions acceleration initiatives.
The company is also seeking to work with government, industry and academic partners to accelerate integration of the system with other advanced technologies.
The modular approach reflects a wider shift in US weapons development towards common architectures, open interfaces and scalable production, allowing new capabilities to be introduced more rapidly without creating entirely separate development and manufacturing programs.
For hypersonic weapons, where development cycles and production costs remain significant challenges, Lockheed Martin’s investment is aimed at creating a pathway to move more rapidly from a proven core design to multiple operational configurations.
If successful, MPDS could provide the US military with a more adaptable hypersonic weapons family while allowing Lockheed Martin to leverage existing technology, manufacturing infrastructure and supply chains to accelerate production.
