The NATO SeaSparrow Project Office has officially launched a market search for the Next Significant Variant of its flagship surface-to-air missile, unlocking fresh opportunities for Australian defence manufacturing to shape future naval protection.
The NATO SeaSparrow Project Office (NSPO) is seeking industry concept proposals for the Next Significant Variant (NSV) of the Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM). Aimed at outpacing increasingly sophisticated adversarial threats such as high-speed manoeuvring anti-ship missiles, sea-skimmers and electronic warfare tactics, the market research effort targets a complete Guided Missile Assembly or specialised subsystems.
Crucially, the project requires a Modular Open Systems Approach and government-purpose data rights to ensure rapid capability insertion, lower life cycle costs and seamless interoperability across allied fleets.
To remain compatible with existing naval launch architecture, the next-generation interceptor must maintain a maximum 10-inch (254mm) diameter to allow quad-packing within Mark 41 Vertical Launching System tactical modules.
The NSPO is seeking designs that perform reliably in dense, contested radio frequency, electro-optical and infrared environments. Concepts must demonstrate advanced multi-target discrimination, high-G force manoeuvrability, resilient communications links and robust resistance to threat countermeasures. Technical deliverables and software source codes must be fully releasable across all 12 consortium member nations.
For Australia, this announcement represents a major milestone for both sovereign naval capability and the domestic defence sector. As a core partner in the 12-nation NATO SeaSparrow Consortium, Australia relies on the ESSM as a critical layer of layered air defence across the Royal Australian Navy’s Anzac Class frigates and Hobart Class guided-missile destroyers.
Australian industry already plays a pivotal role in the global ESSM supply chain, with local manufacturers delivering vital components, including thrust vector control mechanisms, dorsal fins, guidance software and rocket motor assemblies.
The emphasis on an open, modular architecture provides Australian defence firms and sub-tier suppliers with a direct pathway to propose, export and integrate indigenous innovations into the missile's future configuration.
The initiative serves as an advanced market research notice to inform upcoming procurement strategies, which may include prototype development contracts. Defence contractors and specialised subsystem suppliers have 60 days from the posting date to submit detailed capability statements.
Submissions must address technical readiness levels, model-based systems engineering capabilities, intellectual property arrangements and supply-chain resilience.
