Navantia Australia has announced it will establish a new underwater technologies innovation hub in Melbourne, supported by the Victorian Government to accelerate maritime research, engineering and technology development.
The project, supported by a Victorian Government grant, will expand Navantia Australia’s Design and Engineering Centre and position Melbourne as the company’s Asia-Pacific hub for underwater technology research and development.
The hub will focus on emerging maritime technologies, strengthen sovereign industrial capability and create opportunities for highly skilled engineers, researchers and industry partners.
Navantia Australia Managing Director Israel Lozano said the centre would help translate Australian research into practical maritime capability.
“This investment will accelerate the development of advanced underwater technologies in Australia and deepen our collaboration with Victoria’s research, engineering and industry ecosystem,” Mr Lozano said.
“Melbourne has the skilled workforce, innovation base and industry partnerships needed to turn leading research into practical maritime and defence outcomes.”
The project will support collaboration with Victorian universities, research organisations and industry partners to bring next-generation underwater technologies closer to operational use.
Victorian Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Melissa Horne, said the project reflected Victoria’s strength in technology-led industry.
“This project will create high-value jobs, attract investment and strengthen Victoria’s role as a leader in advanced manufacturing, engineering and innovation,” Minister Horne said.
The agreement reinforces a shared commitment to maritime innovation, sovereign capability and long-term economic growth.
