Veteran-founded AUKUS defence technology company GaardTech has opened a new 500m2 deep workspace in South Brisbane; purpose-built for focused software, embedded, artificial intelligence and computer science work.
The new site joins GaardTech's engineering factory, PCB laboratory, data centre, HQ and test range, bringing the company's total footprint in South East Queensland to 671,778 m2, or 166 acres of facilities and space.
“I built GaardTech from the savings from my two tours of Afghanistan. Every dollar since has been earned from creating value and helping customers,” according to GaardTech chief executive officer and founder Steen Bisgaard.
“Because I own the outcome, we can move fast and stay focused. There's no heavy governance layer slowing decisions down, so the discipline has to come from us.
“We decide, we build, and we deliver for the customer.”
GaardTech said the expansion exists for its customers and for the security of its partner nations. Every square metre adds capacity to produce sovereign hardware rapidly and at scale, when the customer needs it. That footprint was built with zero external investment: no venture capital and no outside equity.
The company believes it is one of the clearest examples of bootstrapped, organic growth in the AUKUS industry: founded in Australia in 2018, with facilities in Australia, the UK and the USA in 2026.
The company also operates facilities in the United Kingdom and the United States, and plans to expand in both equally in 2027. It will also expand into the European Union, with its eyes on Poland and the Nordics, extending and strengthening that base.
In addition, GaardTech is currently recruiting software, embedded, AI, computer science, mechanical, electrical and RF engineers. Its 2027 graduate positions are open now.
“Everything we build, we build so our customers win. When our nations are drawn into a fight, they must win every battle. Not most. Everyone. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, and it is why we are growing. Stronger together,” according to Bisgaard.
