In this special podcast, hosts Liam Garman and Steve Kuper speak with UNSW Canberra Associate Professor Wayne Reynolds to discuss the impact of today’s AUKUS submarine announcement.
The trio begin discussing Australia’s long history of partnership with the United Kingdom on nuclear power, nuclear-propelled submarines, and research collaboration.
They then shift to discuss the impact of the Cold War agreements which hindered Australia’s development of a nuclear-capable workforce and the challenges facing the country as it stands up the engineering, trade, and naval workforce necessary to operate, maintain, and upgrade the nuclear-powered submarine fleet.
Finally, the trio discuss the basing arrangements of the future submarine fleet and the infrastructure investments which will be responsible for hosting the future submarine fleet.
