Raytheon secures $1.2bn contract to provide Patriot defence system to Germany

Raytheon has been awarded a $1.2 billion contract to supply Germany with Patriot air and missile defence systems to augment Germany’s existing air defence infrastructure with additional Patriot equipment.

Raytheon has been awarded a $1.2 billion contract to supply Germany with Patriot air and missile defence systems to augment Germany’s existing air defence infrastructure with additional Patriot equipment.

The scope of the contract includes the most current Patriot Configuration-3+ radars, launchers, command and control stations, associated spares, and support and is part of a larger order that will expand Germany’s existing Patriot system.

Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon said, “This contract reflects the global emphasis on advanced air and missile defence capabilities and the steadfast confidence in Patriot.”

Patriot serves as the backbone of air defence for 19 countries – including Germany, the US, and Ukraine – providing a combat-proven capability against the most advanced and complex threats.

"With this expansion, Germany will not only modernise its own significant air defence but enhance its interoperability with allies and further strengthen a core NATO mission,” Laliberty added.

Germany’s new Patriot missile fleet will be operated by the Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 1, attached to the German Lufftwaffe and is responsible for anti-aircraft warfare and providing counter-battery fire for the German Air Force.

This announcement comes following the successful completion of a test of the PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) in March 2023, which saw the Patriot system successfully engage and intercept an advanced medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) target at the US military’s Kwajalein Atoll testing area.

The Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept of Target (PATRIOT) missile system protects ground forces and critical assets at all echelons from advanced aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles (TBM). The Patriot Advanced Capability – 3 (PAC-3) is the US Army’s premier guided air and missile defence (AMD) system providing highly reactive hit-to-kill capability in both range and altitude while operating in all environments.

PAC-3 MSE improves upon the original PAC-3 capability with a higher performance solid rocket motor, modified lethality enhancer, more responsive control surfaces, upgraded guidance software and insensitive munitions improvements.
