Australian Army soldiers have conducted a live-fire trial to certify the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile on the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System.

Soldiers from 111 Battery, 16th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery conducted the trails with the short range air-to-air missiles from a Hawkei High Mobility Launcher at Woomera Test Range in South Australia earlier this year from 24 to 31 May.

“NASAMS is a short-range ground based air defence system, delivering an enhanced force protection system, as part of the ADF’s integrated air and missile defence capability,” Defence said.

The National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program directed Defence to invest in increasing missile defence capability to protect critical Defence infrastructure, facilities and personnel from long-range and high-speed missile threats.”

Raytheon Australia managing director Ohad Katz congratulated the Australian Army on the test.

“Congratulations to the Australian Army and soldiers from 111 Battery, 16th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery on the successful live-fire trial to certify the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile with the Australian National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS),” he said.

“As the prime contractor entrusted by Army to deliver the NASAMS capability under the Land 19 Ph7B program, Raytheon Australia is proud to be playing our part in integrating and delivering this critical system as part of Australia’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) in support of the Defence mission.

“This first ever firing of the Raytheon AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles from the NASAMS High Mobility Launcher is a testament to the successful collaboration between Raytheon (our industry partners) and Army in a landmark program for Australian IAMD.”
