Defence Housing Australia (DHA) has completed two major residential developments in Canberra, delivering 113 new homes to bolster both Defence and private housing supply in the nation’s capital.
The projects include 76 homes for Australian Defence Force members and their families, alongside 37 townhouses released to the private market to help ease local housing pressures.
Located in Coombs and Campbell, the new developments The Crossing and Academy Close provide modern, well-connected housing close to key Defence establishments, including the Australian Defence Force Academy, the Royal Military College–Duntroon, and Defence offices at Russell.
At The Crossing in Coombs, DHA delivered 46 two- and three-bedroom townhouses, blending contemporary design with convenient access to nearby amenities. The homes are now available for Defence members ahead of the current posting cycle.
In Campbell, the Academy Close redevelopment has produced 30 new three- and four-bedroom townhouses and detached homes, purpose-built for Defence families relocating to the Canberra region. Defence personnel began moving in earlier this month, with the first residents at The Crossing to move in tomorrow.
The developments were delivered by local builders Monarch Building Solutions (The Crossing) and Projex Building Group (Academy Close), employing more than 600 local workers throughout construction.
Minister for Defence Personnel Matt Keogh said the new homes reflect the government’s commitment to supporting Defence families while also strengthening the broader Canberra community.
“Providing Defence members and their families with quality housing helps keep ADF members happy in the job and recognises the value we place on their service. The 76 properties in The Crossing and Academy Close will give members moving to Canberra access to modern, high-quality homes with great lifestyle benefits,” Minister Keogh said.
Minister Keogh added, “On top of that, 37 brand new townhouses will go to the private market, helping ease local housing demand.”
Local MP David Smith, member for Bean, said the developments demonstrated how Defence investment can benefit the wider community, saying, “With so many of these homes available to the private market, this is a tangible way the Albanese government is helping ease pressure on Canberra’s housing supply.”
DHA managing director Andrew Jaggers said the organisation was proud to deliver projects that serve both Defence members and the broader public, saying, “Today, DHA proudly delivers 113 new homes that support Defence families posted to Canberra while also contributing to the city’s housing market.”
Jaggers added, “We thank local builders Monarch and Projex for their quality work and commitment to these projects. Tomorrow we’ll welcome the first Defence resident into The Crossing, with more Defence and private residents to move in through to the end of the year.”
Settlements for the 37 privately owned properties at The Crossing are expected to be completed in December 2025.
