The United States is set to potentially approve a foreign military sale to Singapore, supplying patrol and reconnaissance aircraft P-8A and MK 54 lightweight torpedoes to serve in the maritime domain.

The government of Singapore has requested the purchase of up to four P-8A patrol aircraft, seven Guardian laser transmitter assemblies, seven system processors for the AN/AAQ-24(V)N system, and eight MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedoes.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), a US government body that seeks to advance global defence partnerships, revealed earlier this week that the estimated cost of this prospective deal is worth over $2.3 billion.

“This proposed sale will enhance the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Asia,” the DSCA said in a statement.

“The proposed sale will improve Singapore’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible maritime force capable of deterring adversaries and participating in US allied operations.”

DSCA further said that this sale would “support Singapore’s goal of improving national and territorial defence as well as increasing interoperability with US and allied forces”.

“Singapore will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.”

The Advanced Lightweight Torpedo program is currently underway within the US Navy, seeing the new delivery of MK 54 MOD 2 lightweight torpedoes with advanced warhead and processing capabilities, increased performance and enhanced lethality.

Consequently, majority of the MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedoes will be purchased by Singapore directly from the US Navy’s internal stock.

The principal contractor for the deal will be Boeing.
