Australia has commenced Exercise Diamond Seas, a critical component of the Air Warfare Instructor Course.

The exercise seeks to enhance and strengthen the abilities and skills of “the next generation of air power professionals” through integrated training across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Incorporating “force-level” training, participants within the exercise use it as a critical milestone in their completion of the Air Warfare Instructor Course, which merges “intensive” academic study with intricate simulation and practical experience to strengthen skills.

The exercise simulates real-world military operations to support the training of course participants by mirroring what they have learnt in theory and practically applying it to a likely scenario.

Focusing on maritime and coastal environments, Exercise Diamond Seas aims to create environments that maintain the “ambiguity and complexity” of legitimate situations, with participants needing to use a range of skills to overcome the challenges.

Commanding Officer No. 88 Squadron Wing Commander Tim Willetts said this exercise reflects the immense training that the participants have thus far completed, saying that it will assist “some of the most talented aviators who will become Air Force’s most influential combat leaders”.

“Each candidate’s success relies on their ability to rapidly process information, anticipate threats and execute objectives as part of a cohesive combat team.”

The Air Warfare Instructor Course seeks to produce graduates who will have experience in complex aviation scenarios to advise and lead Australia’s capabilities, operational effectiveness and survivability.

“Our candidates will be the first ones to respond and will be required to lead teams with confidence, especially when it comes to achieving our ‘Strategy of Denial’,” WGCDR Willetts added.
