Royal Australian Air Force members have continued to strengthen their medical resilience and preparedness in a new exercise, Viper Walk.
Exercise Viper Walk was held in late March for RAAF aviators in No. 1 Expeditionary Health Squadron (1EHS) to collaborate with members of the New Zealand Defence Force and the United States Pacific Air Forces to ensure medical readiness in combat environments.
The ADF and RAAF forces made significant progress throughout the exercise, successfully integrating a CT scanner into the field.
This marks a major milestone in the development of field medical technology and signifies that Australian forces are now proven to have the capabilities to identify and treat serious injuries in contested environments.
The exercise focused on training personnel to safely move patients through the evacuation chain, combining both civilian “white fleet” vehicles and Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles for ground transport.
“It’s important because if we get called upon to do it for real – the more [training] we've done left of that event – the smoother it's going to go,” said Wing Commander Conan Brett, Commanding Officer No. 32 Squadron.
Collaborating with some of Australia’s closest allies in both military and geopolitics is a strategic move by the ADF, signifying a commitment to interoperability and coordination.
“As a blue [Air Force] commander working within a large joint force, you see cultural differences – but the biggest lesson is that they don’t actually matter. With good communication, we integrated quickly and got the mission done,” Squadron Leader Koryn Roberts said.
International partners agree, with NZDF Lieutenant Issaac Compton, saying that these exercises are valuable in providing news ideas and promoting efficiency in high stress environments.
“Training like this proves we can work together, adjust to different approaches, and still deliver the same results,” LT Compton said.
“Emergency departments are chaotic places, and you often have to adapt on the fly – the biggest lesson I’ll take home is that you can achieve a lot with the right people.”
