Australia has delivered the final Guardian Class patrol boat to the Maldives as part of the Defence Cooperation Program.
This handover, conducted at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia, marks the 24th Guardian Class vessel that Australia has delivered to a partner nation, representing the strong bilateral defence ties between allied nations.
“Australia’s delivery of this Guardian Class patrol boat to Maldives is the product of close cooperation between our two nations and demonstrates the trust, respect and shared purpose that underpins our defence relationship,” said Commander Maritime Border Command, Rear Admiral Brett Sonter.
“Australia is proud to support this important capability, and we remain committed to working alongside Maldives to uphold a peaceful, secure and resilient Indian Ocean region.”
The delivery of this patrol boat will allow the Maldives to conduct more thorough and detailed maritime surveillance activities in the Indian Ocean, as well as assist in humanitarian and disaster relief and general security operations with allies.
The delivery marks a measured step forward in the defence relationship between Australia and the Maldives, reflecting an increased focus on capability and coordination as island nations whose economic stability and security are closely tied to maritime security.
“On behalf of the government, defence force and the people of Maldives, I express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the government and the generous people of Australia for the invaluable contribution towards enhancing Maldives’ maritime defence capability,” said Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem of the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard.
“Australia has been a reliable and consistent developmental partner, and Maldives will continue to work with Australia on areas of mutual concern.
“Maldives recognises the significance of our location and is firmly committed to working with Australia, as well as other regional and international partners, to ensure the safety, security, stability and continued prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region.”
