The chief of the Australian Defence Force has been professionally farewelled in a Canberra ceremony, with the incoming leader welcomed into the role.
Last Thursday, Admiral David Johnston, a three- and four-star officer, handed over command of the ADF to Admiral Mark Hammond following a nearly 50-year career in serving Australia and the country’s defence priorities.
Under his leadership, the ADF has seen record numbers of personnel intake, workforce retention and reduced separation numbers. He is also instrumental in developing exercises and operations that are critical to maintaining Australia’s national security.
“Today we are a larger, more capable, stronger force that is better able to defend Australia and its interests,” he said in his final remarks.
“This is due to the efforts of each and every one of our people. This is an ADF of which Australia can be proud.
“Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to lead, learn and work alongside amazing people of all ranks and backgrounds – members of all three services, Australian Public Servants, contractors and our international partners.
“Without question, the consistent element that has had the greatest impact on me throughout this career is the people with whom I have had the privilege of working.
“It is genuinely inspiring to come to work every day with individuals who are deeply committed to serving their nation and giving their best in often-challenging circumstances.”
ADML Hammond has been a dedicated officer in the Royal Australian Navy for 40 years, previously serving as fleet commander and chief of Navy.
He is the first submariner to hold the leading position.
In his statements, he commends ADML Johnston’s commitment to the ADF, saying: “There are few ADF officers who can say they have dedicated their lives to serving their country with commitment, distinction and pride since the age of 15.
“This is exactly what Admiral Johnston has done. Throughout his impressive career he has always had a reputation for clear and considered leadership, incisive insight and perspective, and a genuine care and compassion for his team and their families.”
