Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Defence Senator Marise Payne have revealed who will replace the current Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin.

Lieutenant General Angus Campbell will replace current Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin when his four-year term ends in June.

Lt Gen Angus Campbell has served as Chief of Army since 2015 and was the public face of Operation Sovereign Borders.

 
 

Outside of the forces, Lt Gen Campbell was a public servant in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet where he rose to become Deputy National Security Adviser.

Lt Gen Campbell secured the Chief of the Defence Force role over Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs and current Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral David Johnston.

The role will see Lt Gen Campbell oversee an annual budget of $34 billion. It is understood that the salary for the role is over $800,000.
