With the news of Project GREYFIN’s first stage approval, Defence Connect has decided to showcase the talents and capabilities of one of Australia’s Special Forces units, the 2nd Commando Regiment (2 Cdo Regt).
One of three Special Operations Command combat units, 2 Cdo Regt utilises the full extent of Australian Defence Force capabilities and weapons to conduct large-scale offensive operations.
Like the Special Air Service Regiment, 2 Cdo Regt personnel are specially selected, with commandos undergoing a rigorous selection process and training cycle before being given the privilege of wearing the unit’s famous sherwood-green beret.
Raised from the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR [Cdo]) in 2009, the 2 Cdo Regt became Australia’s first regular commando capability a decade ago.
This development was conducted through a period of continuous operational tasking with collective deployments to Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Iraq and Afghanistan.
Throughout these operations, 2 Cdo Regt served with distinction, most notably receiving the Unit Citation for Gallantry for its service as a part of the Special Operations Task Group in 2005-2006.
In May this year, the unit carried out a number of counterterrorism training exercises on various platforms and situations.
