Defence interests in cyber differ substantially from industry and enterprise cyber security. They are organised into a number of different selection criteria, including: 

• Cyber Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy
• The Human Element
• Trustworthy and Resilient Systems
• Situational Awareness
• Mission Assurance
• Threat Countermeasures and Effects

Successful submissions should respond to these selection criteria:

• Alignment to Defence strategy and the example projects;
• Future science criticality;
• Collaboration depth (the amount of collaboration proposed among universities, industry, Defence Science and Technology and other government organisations);
• Delivery of outcomes (the ability of the proposers to deliver the agreed outcomes and milestones); and
• Leap ahead potential for Defence.

A two-stage selection process is being employed. Stage one is a 500-word statement addressing the selection criteria. Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to submit a stage two proposal in further detail.

Current and new collaborations with Defence Science and Technology are encouraged. Enhancing collaboration between universities and industry is one goal of the NGT program and such collaboration is encouraged.

Together with the Defence Innovation Hub and the Centre for Defence Industry Capability, these three form the integrated Defence innovation system.

With an investment of $730 million over the decade to June 2026, the Next Generation Technologies Fund is a forward-looking program focusing on research and development in emerging and future technologies for the “future Defence force after next”.
