Former BAE Systems Australia CTO joins Babcock

Babcock Australasia has appointed a defence industry veteran to spearhead its engineering and technology team.

Babcock Australasia has appointed a defence industry veteran to spearhead its engineering and technology team.

Brad Yelland has been named as Babcock Australasia’s inaugural executive director, engineering and technology, tasked with advancing engineering capability and career development in the region.

Yelland joins Babcock from BAE Systems, where he held senior leadership positions over a 30-year period, commencing in 1991.

Babcock’s incoming appointee most recently served as BAE Systems Australia chief technology officer from March 2019.

Yelland has also previously held roles as BAE Systems Australia’s engineering director, and head of business strategy.

The industry veteran is the latest addition to Babcock Australasia’s executive team, with the company recently appointing Martin Halloran as executive director, strategy and future business.

The pair are expected to spearhead Babcock Australasia’s export push, creating contract opportunities for its Arrowhead 140 frigate and supporting the Royal Australian Navy’s transition to nuclear-powered submarines and sustainment under the AUKUS agreement.

Reflecting on the revamped executive team, Babcock Australasia CEO David Ruff commented, “It is exciting to have leaders of the calibre of Brad and Martin joining Babcock’s top team.

“Their talent, experience and credibility add new dimensions to our business, as we enter our next sustainable growth phase in the region.”

The appointments come just days after Babcock Australasia joined the Institute for Collaborative Working (ICW) Australia as an inaugural executive network member, and assumed a position on the organisation’s advisory board.

The firm will be tasked with supporting the delivery of complex programs and solutions by promoting transparency, mutual support and shared benefits.

This is an extension of Babcock International Group’s founding membership of the global ICW, and is expected to combine Babcock’s corporate experience of collaboration across its value chain.
