The new chief executive, who will also sit as a member of the executive board of thyssenkrupp AG, will commence his new role on 1 May 2022.
Oliver Burkhard has been appointed chief executive of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems at an extraordinary meeting of the supervisory board this month, with Burkhard expected to commence in his role on 1 May.
"I am very much looking forward to this task and working with the employees of Marine Systems. Discussions on the further development of the company can now be conducted strategically from a single source. This also takes account of the changed situation: Marine Systems is important for thyssenkrupp and for Germany's security architecture,” Burkhard said.
According to a release from the company, the decision to place Burkhard on the executive board of thyssenkrupp AG as well as leading thyssenkrupp Marine Systems represents the importance of the business unit within the entire group while also hoping to extend the business unit’s independence into the future.
Prior to his appointment as CEO, Burkhard has been chairman of the supervisory board of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems GmbH since 2017.
Burkhard takes over from former chief executive officer Dr Rolf Wirtz, who will continue his service with the company until 1 May as a consultant.
Dr Klaus Keysberg, chief financial officer of thyssenkrupp AG, is expected to serve as the new chairman of the supervisory board of thyssenkrupp Marine systems.
