Elbit Systems launches multi-mission tactical radar

A next-generation tactical radar system has been unveiled by the Israel-based defence contractor.

A next-generation tactical radar system has been unveiled by the Israel-based defence contractor.

Elbit Systems has announced the launch of DAiR a simultaneous multi-mission tactical radar, designed to replace target prioritisation in a bid to strengthen tactical terrain dominance, protection against unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and border security.

The new radar system unveiled at Eurosatory 2022 is billed as an X-band software defined radar system, which incorporates hundreds of digital receivers, sophisticated algorithms and computing cores with artificial intelligence technology.

DAiR is reportedly capable of simultaneous detection and tracking of thousands of objects of various sizes and velocities.

The new capability can be deployed by a tactical force for the monitoring of a large number of targets human combatants, small quadcopters, helicopters, UAS platforms, vessels and artillery at a distance of up to 15 kilometres.

According to Elbit Systems, the DAiR radar is compatible with the All-purpose Structured EUROCONTROL Surveillance Information Exchange (ASTERIX) protocols, supporting the sharing of information with C4I systems.

“As warfare becomes increasingly multi-domain, the target prioritising capability, that is central to legacy radars, becomes a liability,” Oren Sabag, general manager of Elbit Systems ISTAR & EW, said.

“Forces are compelled to apply multiple radars just to keep up with the evolving threat – holding a common operational picture becomes harder and costs increase.

“The DAiR radar system addresses these challenges, does not rely on target prioritisation, thereby aligning the radar capability with the imperatives of multi-domain warfare.”
