The announcement follows a longstanding relationship between the ADF and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) as part of the Defence Cooperation Program, forming part of a DFAT-led whole of government support program for the country’s national elections.

According to Major General Scott Winter, Commander of ADF operations in the South-West Pacific, those deployed will collaborate with the PNG Electoral Commission, PNGDF and the Royal PNG Constabulary.

“Our personnel are providing specialist planning, logistics and air transport support to PNG authorities to assist with their national election,” MAJGEN Winter said.

“This mission is enabled by the capabilities of the ADF, particularly the Royal Australian Air Force C-27J Spartan and C-130J Hercules aircraft. These aircraft will support the transportation of election material and personnel prior to, during and post the election period.”

Earlier in the year, the Commonwealth announced the development of a $580 million package to support the upgrade of critical port infrastructure across Papua New Guinea.

As part of the package, Australia is expected to provide assistance to the PNG Ports Corporation to better enable the organisation to undertake much needed repairs and upgrades on the nation’s key ports. The upgrades will enable larger ships to dock in PNG, supporting trade between the country and the broader global community.

The then minister for foreign affairs and minister for women Marise Payne explained that the port upgrades will not only improve PNG’s trade capacity but will also support the country’s economic resilience.

“Today’s announcement strengthens Australia’s enduring friendship with Papua New Guinea through a fiscally sustainable partnership in quality port infrastructure. It will have broad based economic and social benefits for businesses and communities,” then minister Payne said.
