Defence industry stakeholders across the state have been invited to apply for the next round of innovation grants.
The sixth round of the Defence Innovation Partnership’s Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) is now open for South Australian-based projects from 11 July to 29 August 2022.
As part of the program, up to $150,000 would be available for successful applicants, supporting collaboration across government, universities and industry for defence-relevant research, development and innovation.
This forms part of the CRF and the Defence Innovation Partnership’s broader push to build an innovation community across a range of disciplines to meet future ADF capability requirements.
A number of projects funded by the CRF since its launch went on to receive additional funding from other sources, including the Australian government’s Defence Innovation Hub.
Recipients of the latest round of funding are set to be announced later this year.
South Australia’s Minister for Defence and Space Industries Susan Close noted the program’s achievements since inception in 2018, with nearly $4 million in grants awarded to 25 South Australian projects.
“This program is incredibly valuable in the way it connects researchers with defence industry and government and has already produced tangible success stories,” Minister Close said.
“Research and innovation is vital to our sovereign defence capability and we have some of the best researchers here in South Australia.”
The launch of this latest round of state-based funding follows Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro’s announcement of round two recipients of the National Intelligence and Security Discovery Research Grants (NISDRG) program, aimed at addressing emerging threats in a changing national security environment.
The grants are expected to fund further research into:
- addressing vulnerabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) systems;
- investigating supply chain risks;
- new explosive detection methods;
- the development of sensing technology;
- secure computing; and
- machine learning for miniature satellites and electromagnetic shielding.
The grants are administered by the Australian Research Council (ARC), tasked with enabling national intelligence and security communities to systematically engage with Australian researchers.
