The global defence prime has been tasked with delivering military SATCOM capability to the armed forces of two NATO members.
Airbus has been selected to deliver satellite communications services to the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic and the Netherlands over the next 15 years.
As part of the arrangement, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands are set to leverage two and three channels, respectively, of the Airbus UHF (ultra-high frequency) military communications hosted payload.
The UHF payload, which is set to be operated from Airbus’ Network Operations Centre in Toulouse, supports a total of 18 UHF channels.
The channels are designed to enable up to 200 simultaneous communications over Europe, the Middle East, Africa, as well as large parts of Asia, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean (extending to western Australia).
Military UHF SATCOMS are leveraged by the armed forces for operations on land, at sea and in the air.
The payload is scheduled to launch aboard the EUTELSAT 36D telecommunications satellite in 2024.
Airbus is expected to base the design of the EUTELSAT 36D satellite on its Eurostar Neo platform.
In addition to the UHF payload, the satellite will also be equipped with 70 Ku-band transponders for TV broadcasting.
