HMAS Hobart visits Japan as part of UN agreement

The ship visited the dual-flagged United Nations and United States base in Okinawa as part of the United Nations – Government of Japan Status of Forces Agreement.

The ship visited the dual-flagged United Nations and United States base in Okinawa as part of the United Nations – Government of Japan Status of Forces Agreement.

Throughout the port visit, Defence confirmed that the crew became familiar with the UN-SOFA procedures where they flew the UN flag.

The base supports US, Japanese and UN-GOJ ships, according to the US Navy Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa, Captain Patrick Dziekan.

CAPT Dziekan was given a tour of the Australian vessel by the HMAS Hobart’s Commanding Officer, Commander Andrew Pepper.

“It’s a beautiful ship and I am really proud that we are able to support Hobart here these last few days,” CAPT Dziekan said.

“I wish them the best as they continue their mission in this area of responsibility.”

Australian forces familiarised themselves the necessary procedures at the site.

“All round it was a successful visit,” CMDR Pepper said.

“Coming to White Beach Naval Facility has given us really great insight and flexibility if required moving forward through our deployment.”
