Aussie SME secures US Marine innovation contract

Defence Industry Minister Melissa Price has confirmed a $1.4 million deal between Canberra-based Kord Defence and the US Marine Corps to enhance the lethality of the warfighter.

Defence Industry Minister Melissa Price has confirmed a $1.4 million deal between Canberra-based Kord Defence and the US Marine Corps to enhance the lethality of the warfighter.

Kord Defence, which develops programmable control systems for military and law enforcement markets, credits their export success to the early investment by the federal government in their innovative technologies.

Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price welcomed the announcement, saying, "I’m pleased to see the investment our government made in Kord has enabled them to grow and pursue new export opportunities in global markets."

The contract will enable Kord to complete the development of its Rifle Accessory Control Unit technology, and further cements Australian industry as producers of world-leading technology in high-demand globally.

"Along with growing the sovereign capability of our own defence industry, this is precisely what we designed the Defence Innovation Hub to do," Minister Price added.

Kord managing director Dr Peter Moran said development of their technology would not have been possible without the support of the Defence Innovation Hub.

"Winning an Innovation Hub contract in 2017 enabled us to develop a wireless control system, which formed the basis of the technology now being tested by the United States Marine Corps," Dr Moran said.

The Defence Innovation Hub’s open and competitive approach to investment is assisting innovative small businesses.

The hub runs an open call for proposals against defined innovation priorities, whereby you can submit your proposals to Defence 365 days of the year.

Throughout the year, the hHub also run Special Notices, which is a novel challenge-based solicitation that seeks innovative solutions to specific Defence capability challenges.
