Applications open for AUSMURI 2020 program

Opportunities are available for Australian universities under Australia-US Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative Program (AUSMURI 2020) on the designated topic 'Cyber Autonomy through Robust Learning and Effective Human/Bot Teaming'.

Opportunities are available for Australian universities under Australia-US Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative Program (AUSMURI 2020) on the designated topic 'Cyber Autonomy through Robust Learning and Effective Human/Bot Teaming'.

AUSMURI is part of the Next Generation Technologies Fund (NGTF).

The designated topic for AUSMURI funding has been selected by the Australian Department of Defence from topics announced by the US Department of Defense in its Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI).

==============
==============

The designated topic, 'Cyber Autonomy through Robust Learning and Effective Human/Bot Teaming', is aligned to the NGTF priorities of cyber and trusted autonomous systems.

This project will generate new concepts and techniques for trusted cyber autonomous operations to achieve mission assurance under highly dynamic and contested environments. Developed concepts and techniques will support:

  • Robust learning;
  • Anti-fragility adaptation;
  • Cyber bot teaming; and
  • Cyber bot teaming with human agents.

An Australian university selected to be part of a US-Australia collaborative research project through the program may be eligible for funding up to a maximum of $1 million per year over 3 years, with a possible extension for a further two years.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have an Australian business number (ABN);
  • Be a higher education provider listed at Table A or Table B of the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (Cth)
  • Be the lead Australian university in an approved MURI submission on a designated topic

AUSMURI operates in conjunction with the US Department of Defense’s MURI and encourages partnerships between Australian and US-based institutions.

Each year, AUSMURI designates a topic that is a research priority for Australia’s future defence capability. If an Australian university is part of a successful submission to the US MURI for a research project on the designated topic, it can then apply for AUSMURI funding for that project.

The AUSMURI program will provide 100 per cent of eligible project costs up to a maximum of$1 million per year over three years. Projects may be extended for a further two years, subject to approval, with additional funding of $1 million per year.

Eligible projects must:

  • Be approved through MURI on a designated topic;
  • Include eligible expenditure; and
  • Be undertaken in Australia.

Submissions for the US-based MURI program close on 14 September 2020 (US time). Go to the AUSMURI grant page for more information about the program and how to apply.
