Veteran Alexander Hering was awarded the First Choice College Scholarship this week, which will be used to support the veteran undertaking a Diploma of Business and broadening his skillset.

The First Choice College Veteran Scholarship Program was created to support current and former service men and women and even their families to undertake further education. It is hoped that the program will support further employment opportunities.

Sarah Bray, business development manager at First Choice College, welcomed the opportunity to support veteran education and training through the program.

“There were many wonderful entries, all with their winning attributes … reading each of the stories re-emphasised why we are a huge supporter of this program. Helping veterans transition into the next stage of their career is something we are honoured to be involved in,” Bray noted.

Hering has spent 35 years in the Australian Defence Force and hopes to create a business of his own in his civilian life.

“I am very grateful to have been chosen for this opportunity. As I look to starting a business of my own, a Diploma in Business Management will help me enhance the skills I already have through my career in Defence,” Hering noted.

Ivan Slavich, chief executive of Soldier On, explained that collaborations such as the partnership between Soldier On and First Choice College are critical steps in supporting the transition between military and civilian life.

“Soldier On works with a number of education providers around the country to deliver accessible learning to our Defence community. This collaboration with First Choice College is helping to enable veterans and their families to secure education opportunities that lead to new pathways into employment,” Slavich said.

“We would like to thank Alexander for his service to our country and wish him all the best in his studies and future career.”
