HENSOLDT has been subcontracted to help develop secured data and voice communication capabilities with L16 Tactical Data Link for European military operations.

HENSOLDT, a sensor solutions provider with expertise in tactical data links, has been selection to help develop next-generation Tactical Data Links to support the execution of future European military operations.

The multimillion-euro contract between HENSOLDT and prime contractor OCCAR will see the company develop new hardware and encryption capabilities for a new data distribution system dubbed ESSOR MIDS (European Secure Software Radio Multifunctional Information Distribution System).

According to HENSOLDT, the project is funded by France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the European Commission in conjunction with the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) under grant agreement number 044.

“Multi netting, mobile ad hoc networking, low latency and high data rates are the cornerstones of future networked systems like FCAS,” Hans-Joachim Reijinga, comms products manager at HENSOLDT, said.

“We are very pleased to be able to participate in the creation of a seamless, modern, European and flexible data link for air, sea and ground applications. ‘ESSOR MIDS’, a successor to the existing MIDS datalink, will provide European high-performance data link capabilities including a new European encryption, high capability Wave Forms with extended Link 16 functionalities and an Intra Flight Data Link Wave Form (IFDLWF) while securing interoperability within NATO and Allied Nations.”

It is hoped that the new ESSOR MIDS project will enable further intra-European co-operation for the creation of joint technologies in software-defined radio systems for European militaries. Already, the four nations have developed a fighter terminal dubbed the F-ESSOR MIDS.

Closer to home, HENSOLDT Australia recently announced the establishment a new office within the Newcastle Airport aviation precinct, directly adjacent to RAAF Base Williamtown and aerospace precinct, Astra Aerolab.

Housing two permanent staff members and a team of 10 contractors, the new office is ideally positioned to enable HENSOLDT Australia to support local projects at RAAF Base Williamtown.

As a market leader in sensor solutions for the defence and security industries, HENSOLDT has had a strong presence in the Asia-Pacific region as an innovator of advanced sensor technology at every step of the value chain.

HENSOLDT's addition to the airport precinct is a welcome addition, according to Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock.

"Globally, HENSOLDT have an extensive history spanning over 150 years, where innovation, excellence and entrepreneurship propelled them to the enviable position they’re in now – with offices located across the globe including one here at Newcastle Airport,” Dr Cock continued.

"We are proud to be home to a vibrant defence industry ecosystem, so we’re pleased to welcome HENSOLDT Australia as one of our newest tenants.

"We celebrate their ongoing commitment to building local capability by drawing on their extensive experience delivering to the defence industry.
