Northrop Grumman wins Astute Class support contract

The global defence contractor has been selected to deliver sustainment services to the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.

The global defence contractor has been selected to deliver sustainment services to the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.

Britain’s Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) has awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman UK (NGUK) for the delivery of in-service support for the British Royal Navy’s Astute Class Submarine Platform Management System (PMS).

Northrop Grumman, which is the original developer of the fully-integrated PMS installed on Astute Class boats four to seven, will be responsible for maximising the submarine fleet’s availability.

The PMS leverages advanced technology to control and monitor on-board systems and machines, providing real-time information and diagnostics.

“We will leverage our proven design and manufacturing expertise to delivering this critical technology for one of the Royal Navy‘s most advanced submarine fleets,” Nick Chaffey, chief executive, Northrop Grumman UK, Europe and Middle East, said.

“Our digital-first approach to delivery will reduce life cycle costs and help the UK maintain its strength beneath the waves.”

The NGUK has been delivering interim support since April 2020.

The PMS is also installed on Type 45 destroyers and Hunt Class mine sweepers.

In total, the NGUK supports more than 40 Royal Navy platforms and establishments.

This latest contract comes after the global contractor was awarded a $65 million contract from the US Navy for the commencement of full rate production of its Link-16 offering.

The technology will be integrated into the US Marine Corps AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters.

The AH-1Z Viper attack helicopter is used to provide rotary wing close air support, anti-armour, anti-air, armed escort, armed/visual reconnaissance and fire support co-ordination capabilities.

The UH-1Y Venom multi-role utility helicopter also performs close air support missions, along with combat assault support, search and rescue/casualty evacuation, armed escort/reconnaissance, command and control, and special operation support.

The Link-16 capability is tipped to provide both variants with the ability to share data and communications securely with other aircraft and users of military networks.
