Elbit Systems unveiled the company’s new ARCAS weapons system, integrating AI-enabled technologies with an assault rifle to provide war fighters with enhanced combat capabilities.
According to a release from the company, the weapons system enhances the flow of information to the war fighter through an inbuilt AI system, which was integrated with the weapons’ electro-optical sight and mounted eye piece.
It is expected he technological enhancement will help turn the weapons systems into networked machines that improve the flow of information on the battlefield, in turn increasing the effectiveness of operators.
Elbit suggests that the new technology is expected to provide range measurement, automatic ballistic correction, detection of fire sources, video motion detection, the ability for war fighters to shoot around corners and from their hips, integrate with command and control (C2) systems, navigation support, combatant identification, monitoring of ammunition stoppages and finally zeroing without the requirement for a live fire.
Elbit explains that the AI system is built into the rifle’s forward grip, in which it processes data received by the soldier’s field of view through the electro-optical sight, as well as data from command and control systems and other ARCAS operators in the theatre. This information is relayed back to the operators by way of visual augmented reality either through the helmet mounted eyepiece or the rifle’s electro-optical sight. The system is controlled via a joystick on the rifle’s forward grip.
Oren Sabag, general manager Elbit Systems ISTAR, welcomed the ground breaking evolution.
“ARCAS is another important building block in our advanced portfolio of solutions for dismounted soldiers. The development of this new solution is part of our continuous effort and R&D investments aimed at enabling a step-change in the effectiveness and survivability of infantry and Special Forces,” Sabag said.
